Improving Fitness for the Hiking Season – Real Time
I’ve ventured into many different fitness journeys over the years. I once did “100 days of fitness” with Jax over at Cooking with Jax – we even did a three day juice cleanse … and now that I revisit that post (Juice, Potato Chips & Sour Cream) it would appear sitting on the couch eating potato chips and dip is a wee epiphany moment for me. The things you learn about yourself …

I’m currently sitting on the couch. I’ve been sitting on the couch for the last 3 hours. A laptop is in my … lap. The Netflix adorns the TV screen … yes, Netflix, I’m still watching that, thanks for asking. Do you suppose Netflix is programmed to call 911 if you don’t respond in a certain time-frame? That would actually be helpful. Like, if I choked on my potato chips or something.
My husband is at work and I just had potato chips, dip and pop for dinner. It was ginger ale though … that makes it healthy pop … right?
This is not preparing me for all the adventures I want to achieve this year.
Time to do something about it.
I signed up for a 5km run on April 8. Today is March 2. I have 37 days.
I’ve struggled with motivation this winter. I’m not sure why. I always have ebbs and flows. Life has been stressful, I could have used the exercise to stay on top of things, I didn’t.
So this post is going to be a live ticker-tape of the next 37 days. I will revisit this post as a (quasi … let’s be honest, I know myself) daily journal of any small thing I do each day that gets me closer to fit.
March 3 – The Fitness Journey Begins … Again
• 20 squats while waiting for my coffee to brew … heavy snowfall warning in effect … might have to hit the treadmill after work.
• Ran the stairs at the office when I went back and forth to the bathroom.
March 4
• Day 1 of Week 2 of the C25K app. Small weight workout to get started. There’s a foot of snow out there … not cool.
March 5
• 14 hours helping host an event … Jiggs Dinner for more than 100. Sean McCann in concert. Great day.

March 6
• Complete slacker … zero, zip, zilch, nada … also … fricken winter out there.
March 7
March 8
Treadmill Day with the couch to 5K app. I’m skipping through some of the days, trying to find the one that pushes just enough. Today was day 3 of week 2.

March 21
I managed to get out for a mini-hike today. My daughter-in-law and I hit the Overlander Trail in Jasper National Park. But the snow is still pretty thick in the covered spots. I was hoping the open slopes would be a bit dryer than they were.
March 22
See all those blank days up there …. One word … snow. I’m really tired of the snow.

April 1 – Who’s the fool now?
Me … I am … did we have any doubt? I have not trained enough.
April 2
April 3
April 4
My first time running 20 minutes in a row.
April 5
Morning walk.
April 6
Did a 30 minute run/walk cycle in the morning.
April 7
Walked in the morning before work.
April 8 – Race Day!
So … I ran in the race … I did a 5km in less than an hour. Not fast by any stretch, but I did it. My calves are insanely tight and there’s something going wrong when I try to run too long. But I’ve done two more 5km runs since … so I’m going in the right direction.
